Our Programs

At SPECO, we believe in the power of community to drive change.

We are dedicated to addressing critical needs in Huntington through innovative and compassionate programs. Our initiatives focus on supporting our neighbors in need and those facing food insecurity and substance use disorders.
Food Pantry Program

SPECO’s Food Pantry Program provides neighbors with essential groceries, shelf-stable foods, and basic household supplies. Our pantry is designed to meet immediate needs with dignity and compassion — no paperwork or requirements, just support when it’s needed most. With our food pantry, we only ask two questions: How many people are in your family? And How else can we help?

Pantry Hours

Wednesdays | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Thursdays | 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM
Additional appointments may be available as needed.

Due to the recent rise in community need, households are eligible to receive one pantry bag per week. This ensures we can serve as many neighbors as possible while keeping shelves consistently stocked.

Our Goals

The Food Pantry works to reduce food insecurity by ensuring individuals and families have access to nutritious, ready-to-use items when they need them most.

The pantry is also supported by Cooking with SPECO, our recipe and cooking education program that teaches simple, nutritious, and budget-friendly meal ideas. Cooking with SPECO helps pantry guests make the most of what they receive, offering step-by-step blogs, videos, and tips for preparing healthy meals with accessible ingredients. All classes are supported by the Pallottine Foundation of Huntington as part of our mission to build healthier, stronger communities. Our commitment is simple: no one in our community should go without the basics.

Carebag Services

SPECO provides “carebags” weekly to those in need. We came up with the carebag idea after we kicked off our program in 2019, originally packing hygiene and harm reduction kits with donated supplies.

During COVID-19 Pandemic, our idea grew into what we now call the Carebag Program. Our carebags now includes a variety of emergency materials, ideal to last an individual a few days or a week. Additionally, we sometimes add positive messages in our carebags and have previously dedicated carebags to those in our volunteer community who passed due to issues surrounding homelessness or substance use disorder by adding remembrance sheets.

Carebags are packed monthly and distributed at our weekly and monthly community distributions.

Packing Carebags: On the first Sunday of the month, volunteers gather at the SPECO Outreach Center to pack carebags. Packing happens in an assembly-line fashion and usually lasts an hour. We pack around 175 carebags each month! Time & Location: 12:00PM, 2261 Washington Ave, Huntington, WV

Distributing Carebags: Carebag Distribution happens weekly and monthly at our recurring distributions. Join us any Thursday with carebag distribution at our Thursday Meal, located at Harmony House. Additionally, we distribute carebags at the monthly Floodwall Distribution on the Third Saturday of the month.

What Goes in A Carebag? Our carebag items were chosen based on conversations with those with lived experience. The items change slightly as the seasons change. During the summer months, carebags contain a hygiene kit (soap, washcloth, toothpaste, toothbrush, chapstick), emergency blanket, snack bar, socks, sunscreen packet, bug band, and baby wipes. During the winter months, carebags contain a hygiene kit, emergency blanket, snack bar, socks, winter blanket, hat, hand warmers, and gloves.

Overdose Prevention Services and More

SPECO is a community leader in providing Overdose Prevention services to the West End of Huntington. We provide Naloxone, the life-saving overdose reversal drug, for free to those in need at every distribution we host. In addition, we work with community members and organizations in Cabell County to become trainers and also to provide naloxone. In addition to Naloxone services, we provide additional resources such as Plan B (emergency contraceptive), CPR face masks, and fentanyl drug test strips.

Narcan (Naloxone) Distributions: Every week, SPECO distributes Narcan Nasal Sprays to everyone we can, including community members at risk and those who just want to carry it. Why carry Narcan? The simple answer is to save lives. Want to be a trainer? Ask us about upcoming “Train the Trainer” events and learn how to train community members on how to use Narcan.

Plan B Distribution: Due to partnerships and donations, SPECO can distribute emergency contraceptives to those who are female at birth and do not have easy access to birth control or women’s health services, as well as those who may know someone in need of emergency contraceptives. Consider donating to support this effort.

Naloxone Box: Our most recent project is the SPECO Naloxone Box, where we will place the weather-safe box outdoors in the community for those who may need overdose prevention supplies. Inside the box will be Narcan, Drug Testing Strips, Plan B, CPR Face Masks, and more.

Lot of Love Garden

The Lot of Love Garden is a community-centered food access and volunteer engagement initiative of SPECO, home to nearly 30 raised beds. Established in 2021, the garden grows fresh produce that is harvested and donated directly back into the community.

In 2025, the garden harvested 403.7 lbs of fresh produce with 145.5 volunteer hours contributed!

The garden is a space where neighbors, recovery participants, church volunteers, and community partners share in the work of growing food and building connection. Whether you have a green thumb or just a willingness to show up, there's a place for you here.

The 2026 season has begun! Planting Day is scheduled for May 2026 and we hope you will join! Stay tuned for Garden Hours. Individuals, organizations, and community groups are welcome to get involved. Reach out to us to learn more about how your group can be part of the Lot of Love Garden.

West End Faith Alliance Ministry

The West End Faith Alliance brings together congregations across Huntington's West End to serve neighbors through shared, faith-based ministry. Over the past year, the Alliance distributed food bags to neighbors experiencing food insecurity, hosted Walk in Faith gatherings across multiple congregations, and held faith leader gatherings to strengthen collaboration and shared vision.

In 2026, the Alliance launched its Joint Initiative Care Tree Project in partnership with the Cabell County Family Resource Network's Care Tree project, expanding access to hygiene, cleaning, and personal care products for community members in need.
